AI + Art = Art in the Age of AI
What does tech art look like? To find out, I curated an exhibition around the work of thirteen AI and generative artists.
What does tech art look like?
To find out, I curated an exhibition around the work of thirteen AI and generative artists.
I borrowed that opening question from the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where curators asked, “What does modern art look like?” They answered by mounting a show of early cubist paintings. Now, of course, we know what modern art and cubism art looks like, but back in the 1910 – 30s, the edgiest artists were still testing and experimenting.
My artists too, are trying to figure this new form out.
Entirely new art forms are rare, and for art lovers, this is an amazing moment to experience as acts of innovation and originality play out in real time.
The artwork in this exhibit is mind-made, not handmade, and, because the image might contain data, code, math formulas, and so on, the pieces have built-in layers of meaning. The data belongs to something like a city, star, or person. The math is used to predict ocean tides, bird flight, or the sounds of the Amazon Rainforest. Knowing the origins of the data, math, or code can shape how you see the art.
Synthetic sentience is explored by the artists, and some works feel alive. That raises the question,
Does your art have rights?
Because AI allows artists to mimic and blend styles. Style, which was once everything, is now a design element, like a color, or brush size.
Sorry Style. The newest ‘thing’ is human imagination unleashed from its physical limitations and set free in the digital landscape.
What do you think tech art should look like?

Artist Jiabao Li has a solution for plastic pollution: Let’s eat it. Using bio-engineered trans-species solutions, she suggests that humans consume the plastic they consume. Her art stretches science, expands art, and flexes our imaginations.

Jiabao Li creates works addressing climate change, interspecies co-creation, humane technology, and perceptions. Her mediums include wearable, robot, AR/VR, performance, scientific experiment, installation. In Jiabao’s TED Talk, she uncovered how technology mediates the way we perceive reality. Jiabao is a Tenure Track Assistant Professor at The University of Texas at Austin. Her lab explores the intersection of art, design, technology, and biology. She graduated from Harvard GSD with Distinction and thesis award.
